Stockholm is Sweden's capital and largest city; others typically refer to it as the capital of Scandinavia as it is also the largest urban area in Scandinavia.
This metropolis and its surrounding regions have a population of over 6 million inhabitants. The city stretches over 14 islands, and on the outskirts of the town on the eastern side along the coast, the Mälaren flows into the Baltic Sea among the beautiful island chain of the Stockholm archipelago.
The areas around the archipelago have been inhabited since the Stone Age, in the 6th century BC, and were founded as a city in 1252 by a Swedish statesman, Jarl Birger.

Stockholm region alone accounts for over a third of Sweden's GDP and is among the top 10 parts of Europe with a high GDP per capita. It is also ranked as the global alpha city of the world, and by being the largest city in Scandinavia, many companies have their headquarters there for all collaborations in the Nordics.
The Nobel Prize is awarded in Stockholm, Sweden's political, cultural and economic centre. The city is also Sweden's administrative centre because it is the monarchy's official residence, the prime minister and the Swedish parliament.
