The significant and iconic Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania boasts of being the most dominant volcanic mountain in Africa. It rises majestically 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) above sea level. It is a unique mountain because it is the highest single freestanding mountain in the world.
For mountain addicts and active travellers looking for new adventures, climbing Kilimanjaro is a unique challenge but completely doable. In your quest to climb this mountain, you have to trek through Tanzania's winding beautiful plains, stunning tropical rainforests, alpine meadows, grasses and heaths, desert heights and finally, snow and ice to reach peak Uhuru.
Adventure Global is a company run by seasoned outdoor experts with over a decade of experience on the mountain. Our EU/UK staff and our staff in Tanzania are outdoor people with many successful Kilimanjaro climbs under our belts. All the routes that we will guide you through we have climbed many times, and we have mastered the terrain well.
We do not outsource our services to a third party, which means our local staff will be with you and guide you through every step of the way, all the way to the top of Uhuru and ensure you have a safe and successful descent.
There are seven main routes that you can take that lead to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, Uhuru peak. All routes depart from the south side except one from the north side.
Marangu route, Machame route, Lemosho route, Shira route, Rongai route, Umbwe route and Northern Circle route.
Adventure Global Limited is one of Mount Kilimanjaro's premier tour operators, and we specialize in 5 main routes - Marangu Route, Machame Route, Rongai Route, Lemosho Route and Northern Circuit Route.
Having guided tours on the mountain for a long time, we know anyone can climb the mountain, from a 12-year-old child to an 80-year-old pensioner. You can conquer this mountain with good determination and a will to reach the top. The biggest challenge in climbing Kilimanjaro is its height and rate of ascent, but with good planning, the right equipment, proper clothing, and a calculated rate of ascent, you can climb the mountain. Adventure Global staff will be with you every step of the way to guide you to a successful summit and safe ascent. Our local guides are highly trained professionals who have climbed the mountain many times and understand the terrain very well. They are the main reason for our high success rate in reaching the top.
This depends on your chosen route, but generally, it takes 7 to 11 days to climb to peak Uhuru and descend to the endpoint. The longer you stay on the mountain, the better your acclimatization, significantly increasing your chance of a successful summit.
The weather on Mount Kilimanjaro can vary significantly from hot to extremely cold on the same day, although there is no significant change in temperature from season to season. Instead, temperatures on Kilimanjaro are determined more by altitude and time of day.
At the base of the mountain, the average temperature is around 21 to 27 °C, and at the summit, Uhuru Peak, nighttime temperatures can vary between -7 to -29 °C (20 and -20 degrees Fahrenheit). Like all great mountains, Kilimanjaro creates its weather, which can be highly variable and difficult to predict. Climbers must be prepared for hot, sunny conditions, rain, wind, cold and snow.
Although the best time to climb Kilimanjaro coincides with the "dry" seasons, rain and snow are possible anytime. As you get higher, the temperatures can vary dramatically; one moment, you can be hiking in bright sunshine, and the next, you can be forced to dress against a bitter wind.
Standing at 5,895 meters above sea level, Kilimanjaro is large enough to create its own weather systems. Being on the equator means that the mountain interrupts trade winds (sometimes called "monsoons") that move over the ocean and pull moisture up. This causes the wind to push up towards the top and gradually cool down, producing rain and snow.
Yes, there is snow. The long rainy season between March and May is a result of the trade winds from the southeast. These southerly winds from the Indian Ocean are loaded with moisture, bringing rain to the lower slopes and snow on Mount Kilimanjaro. During this season, the southern slopes receive the most precipitation. The "short rains" in November come from a drier wind coming from the northeast. Because it has not travelled across an ocean, the rains are shorter and less intense than during the "long rain" period. Most of the precipitation during this season falls on the more northerly slopes.
Mount Kilimanjaro can be climbed all year round. But the best months to climb are the dry months, December to mid-March and mid-June to late October. The weather is at its best during these months, with plenty of sunshine, very little rain, fantastic scenery, and clear skies. It is also good to know that Kilimanjaro is a large mountain located on the equator, and because of this, it can create its own weather. Therefore, regardless of the season, there is always a high possibility that the weather can change drastically, and it is always good to be prepared.
The most popular time to climb Kilimanjaro is during the full or new moon period. When climbing on full moon days, you will experience the spectacle of walking under the silvery moonlight; it is so well-lit that you don't need to use your lights. In fact, with clear skies and under a full moon, both the northern stars and the southern constellations are clearly visible in the same sky. Due to the popularity of climbing on full moon nights, the routes can sometimes have heavy traffic, and everyone simultaneously leaves camp for the summit. This can quickly create a bottleneck, but these groups spread quite quickly. If you want to avoid the busier full moon climbs, we suggest skipping the summit climb in the evening and climb in daylight instead.
When packing for your climb, planning your clothing properly is essential. We recommend packing the following:
- Upper base layer
- The lower base layer
- 4-5 pairs of underwear
- 3-4 short-sleeved t-shirts
- 1 insulated hiking pants
- 1-2 long-sleeved climbing shirts
- 1-2 pairs of climbing pants
- 1 insulated winter jacket
- 1 Polartec fleece jacket
- 1 Hard Shell jacket
Your clothing will primarily be based on the day's weather conditions; we recommend wearing your main layer on this day. On cold days, we suggest wearing your base (thermal) layer and your leggings. In addition to your leggings, wear a pair of thick waterproof pants as your outer layer.
On top, we recommend wearing several thin mid-layer long-sleeve t-shirts, a thick fleece and a waterproof synthetic jacket. On your feet and hands, you should wear thick, clean socks and gloves to keep you warm and proper climbing shoes.
Our guides will brief you every night so you can have the right gear and be ready for the next day's climb, but if you need help deciding what to wear, feel free to ask. You should be able to adjust your clothing to control your temperature as long as you have the right gear in your bag.
There are relatively easy and fast rules for what to wear on Kilimanjaro. Just make sure you've packed what's on the gear list and clothes that will maximize your flexibility, keep you comfortable, and, most importantly, keep you dry.
