MT KILIMANJARO Marangu route

Itinerary

Day 1. Arusha to Marangu Gate (from Mandera huts)

An early start after breakfast, we leave Arusha and drive towards the Marangu gate, which is at the southern entrance to Mt Kilimanjaro National Park. On arrival, you will have time to register and check in; from here, we will start our ascent of Mt Kilimanjaro. This climb takes us through woodlands and eucalyptus rainforest, and the scenery is breathtaking as always. There is a high chance that you will see wild animals and different species of birds. Look out for Columbus monkeys. If you are lucky, you can see the whole troop, and then we camp at Mandara huts for the night.

Hiking: 5-7 hours

Height: 2700 meters

Day 2. Mandara Huts to Horombo Huts

This day, we continue through the forest, and after about an hour of climbing, a vast stretch of moorland will open up in front of us. You will see Mawenzi's jagged peak rising majestically into the sky on the winding trail. We will continue hiking until we reach the Horombo huts; here, we will pause to set up camp, dinner and overnight.

Hiking: 5-7 hours

Height: 3720 meters

Day 3. Acclimatization day

As we are already at a high altitude, we will spend this day giving your body time to acclimatize. Feel free to walk up to the Mawenzi huts if you feel well-acclimatized. From here, you can admire the fantastic scenery of Mawenzi and Kibo. You can also take a short hike of about 310 meters of ascent and enjoy the magnificent Zebra Rocks.

It is not unusual to feel sick and a little tired; this is a sign that your body has not appropriately acclimatized to the altitude. If you feel unwell, let us know as soon as possible; also, stay in the cabin and give your body time to acclimatize.

Hiking: 1-2 hours

Height: 4389 meters

Day 4. Horombo to Kibo Huts

This day, we continue our ascent through the heath and into the arid, desolate highlands while enjoying the beautiful scenery. The terrain here is littered with scattered volcanic rocks of various sizes, a testament to the volcanic activities that once occurred here. We will then make a final push to reach the Kibo huts, where we will stay for the night.

This is the night before summit day, so take this time to double-check your gear and be ready for an early climb the next day.

Hiking: 5-7 hours

Height: 4703 meters

Day 5. Summit day! Kibo Huts to Uhuru Peak

We will wake up at midnight with only a few minutes left for a quick meal before our final stretch to the summit. We will pass through rough terrain with loose, scattered volcanic rocks; therefore, many climbers find this part to be the most challenging part of the ascent. We aim to arrive at Gilma Point at dawn to reach the peak of Uhuru at sunset. At Gilma, we will quickly stop to catch our breath and enjoy the beautiful view. Afterwards, we continue with a steady climb along the rim of the crater and make a final push through the loose rocks, ice and snow to reach the peak of Uhuru, the top of Africa.

At the top, you get to congratulate yourself for reaching your goal. Take some great photos in front of the summit Uhuru sign and enjoy the beautiful scenery. We will treat ourselves to hot drinks, coffee or tea before we start our descent down the mountain towards the Horombo huts and later to the Marangu gate.

Hiking: 4-5 hours

Height: 3720 meters

Day 6. Horombo Huts – Marangu Gate to Arusha

This is our last day on the mountain. The descent is relatively easy, and we will hike through the rainforest to the Maragu gate. We will have lunch at the entrance and appreciate our climbing staff as we say goodbye to them. We will leave Mt Kilimanjaro National Park and drive to Arusha. You will check into your hotel for a long hot shower, dinner, and relaxation.

Hiking: 5-7 hours

Height: 1843 meters

Day 7. You can now either start a safari or check in at the airport for your journey home.
