After an early breakfast, we leave Nairobi for Nanyuki. We arrive in Nanyuki in time for lunch, and after lunch, we cross the equator on our way to Sirimon Park gate, 2660 meters above sea level. It is an easy hike from the entrance through the Montane bamboo forest and giant heather area before we finally arrive at Old Moses camp, also known as Judmair. Here, we have dinner and camp for the night. We will take a gradual ascent of 3 to 4 hours, 9 km, reaching an altitude of 680 meters to reach the Old Moses camp located at an altitude of 3,300 meters above sea level.
After breakfast, we will gradually climb to our next campsite, Shipton Camp. It is a 7-hour hike, 14 km and 900 meters of ascent. We will go up some amazing Mackinder valleys past some spectacular Lobelia and Korsört sites and finally arrive at Shipton camp at 4,236 meters. This place juts out from under the majestic glaciers. Here, some beautiful sunbirds and prominent families of stone hyrax have a strange lookout.
We will stay at this altitude on day three to help with your acclimatization, and this will be your rest day. Our tip is to take short hikes and climb to Oblong and Hausberg. You will gain an altitude of at least 370 meters before returning to camp in time for lunch. After lunch, it's a soothing and relaxing party!!
Tip: The best way to acclimatize is to hike high and sleep low, or just lying in the sun and watching the birds sing works well, too!
From Shipton camp, we will follow the path that leads us to camp Kami, just below the north side of camp Batnia, then continue west-southwest up the slopes in the fine snow and finally arrive at Hausberg Col at 4590 meters. We climb to upper Hausberg and then rest at the Hausberg and Oblong ponds. We continue up to the crest of the ridge, also known as Arthur's Seat; here, the trail widens along a beautiful series of rock ledges. We go down to the Mackinders camp for dinner and overnight.
On the fifth day, we begin an early climb to reach the point of Lenana. We start climbing at 02:00, a 4-hour climb to reach the top of Lenana in time for sunrise. At dawn, the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro is clearly visible on the horizon. We then descend to Minto's hut for breakfast, and after a short rest, we begin another descent through gorges and beautiful valleys to Mt Kenya huts, where we have our dinner and rest for the night.
This is our last day on the mountain. After breakfast and refreshment, there will be another descent, a hike of about 2 hours, a 10 km walk and through a fantastic bamboo thicket. You will surely spot some wildlife in the natural rainforest that we will pass through to arrive at the company car that will take us back to Nairobi. You will be dropped off at your hotel or our guest house in Nairobi. End of service when you check in at the airport on your return journey
